Winterizing and Off-Season Storage for Inflatable Boats, SUPs & Kayaks
Last updated: 2026-07-28
Why Winterizing is Critical
Winter storage is the most vulnerable period for inflatable watercraft. Months of inactivity in uncontrolled environments can cause PVC degradation, mold growth, valve failure, and rodent damage. Proper winterizing — cleaning, drying, inspecting, and storing correctly — is essential for preserving your inflatable SUP, kayak, or boat through the off-season. A well-winterized inflatable emerges in spring ready for use; a neglected one may develop permanent damage that requires expensive repairs or replacement.
End-of-Season Cleaning Process
Deep Cleaning Steps
- Inflate to rated PSI for cleaning access to all surfaces
- Wash with mild soap (pH-neutral) and warm water
- Use a soft-bristle brush for EVA deck pads and textured surfaces
- Clean all zippers, D-rings, and bungee cord attachment points
- Rinse thoroughly with fresh water — no soap residue
- Dry with clean towels and allow to air dry completely
Mold Prevention
- Dry in a well-ventilated area for 24-48 hours after cleaning
- Open all valves and allow interior air circulation
- Treat visible mold with vinegar solution (1:4 with water)
- Apply UV protectant spray to PVC surfaces
- Use silica gel packs inside the storage bag for moisture control
- Never store damp — mold grows rapidly in enclosed spaces
Winter Storage Guidelines
Spring Preparation Checklist
Pre-Season Inspection
- Inflate to rated PSI 24 hours before first use
- Soapy water test all seams, valves, and patch areas
- Check for UV damage (cracking, discoloration, stiffness)
- Inspect all D-rings, handles, and bungee cords
- Test pump operation and lubricate if needed
- Check fins for warping or cracks
Spring Readiness
- Pressure test holds for 24 hours with less than 2% loss
- No visible mold, cracks, or material degradation
- All accessories present and functional
- Repair kit contents verified and replenished
- Warranty and serial number documented
