Why Repair Skills Matter

Every inflatable boat, SUP board, or kayak will eventually need a repair. Punctures from oyster shells, fish hooks, and sharp rocks are common. Valves can leak after years of use. Seams can separate under stress. Knowing how to diagnose and repair these issues keeps your equipment in service and saves the cost of replacement. Most repairs are straightforward with the right materials and technique — a well-executed PVC patch is often stronger than the surrounding material.

How to Find a Leak

Visual Inspection

  • Inflate to rated PSI and listen for hissing sounds
  • Run your hand slowly over the surface — you may feel escaping air
  • Look for punctures, abrasion marks, or seam separation
  • Check around valve bases, D-rings, and handle attachments
  • Inspect the bottom of the board/kayak — most punctures occur there

Soapy Water Test

  • Mix mild dish soap with water in a spray bottle
  • Inflate board to rated PSI
  • Spray soapy water on suspected areas
  • Look for bubbles forming — larger bubbles = larger leak
  • Mark each leak with a grease pencil or tape
  • Check valve by squirting soapy water directly into the opening
Techniques

Repair Techniques by Damage Type

Puncture Repair (under 1/4 in)

Deflate completely. Clean area with isopropyl alcohol. Roughen surface with sandpaper. Apply PVC repair adhesive to patch. Center patch over puncture. Press firmly with a roller or your thumb. Apply even pressure for 60 seconds. Let cure 12-24 hours before inflating. The patch should extend at least 1 inch beyond the puncture in all directions.

Seam Delamination

Clean both sides of the delaminated seam. Apply PVC adhesive to both surfaces. Press together firmly and clamp or weight for 24 hours. For high-stress seams (rails, deck seams), reinforce with an additional patch on both sides. If delamination exceeds 4 inches or is on a pressure-bearing seam, seek professional repair.

Valve Replacement

Remove the valve body with the included valve tool. Clean the valve opening. Apply PVC adhesive around the base of the new valve. Insert and tighten. Wait 24 hours for the adhesive to cure. Test with soapy water — bubbles indicate an incomplete seal. Wavefella valves are designed for field replacement with basic tools.

Large Tear (over 1 in)

Large tears in high-stress areas require patching on both sides. Clean and prepare both the interior and exterior surfaces. Apply a patch to the inside first (creates a pressure seal). Apply a larger patch to the outside (structural reinforcement). Round the corners of patches to prevent peeling. Cure 24-48 hours before pressure testing.
