Why Maintenance Matters
Proper maintenance is the single biggest factor in extending the life of an inflatable SUP board. A well-maintained board lasts 5-10 years of regular use; a neglected one may fail within 12-18 months. Inflatable boards face unique challenges — salt water, UV radiation, sand abrasion, and pressure cycling all take their toll. A simple post-session cleaning routine and proper storage can prevent material degradation, valve failure, and delamination, preserving both performance and resale value.
Post-Session Cleaning Routine
After Every Session
- Rinse with fresh water — board, paddle, pump, fins, and bag
- Wipe down PVC surfaces with a soft sponge or microfiber cloth
- Flush valve area with fresh water to remove salt and sand
- Dry with a clean towel before deflating and storing
- Check for scratches, punctures, or loose accessories
Weekly / Monthly
- Deep clean with mild soap (pH-neutral, no solvents)
- Inspect seams and rails for delamination signs
- Test valve with soapy water for air leaks
- Lubricate valve o-ring with silicone grease
- Clean EVA deck pad with mild brush to restore grip
Proper Storage Guidelines
Basic Repair Techniques
Small Punctures (under 1/4 inch)
- Deflate the board completely
- Clean and dry the area around the puncture
- Apply PVC repair glue to the patch and puncture area
- Press firmly and let cure for 12-24 hours
- Inflate and check with soapy water for leaks
When to Seek Professional Repair
- Seam delamination longer than 2 inches
- Valve base damage or threading issues
- Multiple punctures in the same area
- Drop stitch thread breakage (board bulges)
- UV-damaged PVC becoming brittle or cracked
