SUP Touring Guide: Board Selection, Packing, Navigation

What is SUP Touring?
SUP touring — also called expedition paddling or adventure SUP — involves covering distance on a stand-up paddle board, typically over several hours or days. Unlike recreational paddling around a beach or lake, touring requires a board optimized for glide efficiency, gear storage, and endurance. Touring paddlers cover 8-20 miles per day, carrying food, water, safety gear, and camping equipment. The right board, paddle, and preparation make the difference between an unforgettable adventure and a艰苦 struggle when the wind picks up.
Touring Board Features
Length (11-14 ft)
Longer boards track straighter and glide farther per stroke. Touring-specific boards are 11'6" to 14' long. The extra length improves waterline efficiency and reduces the number of strokes per mile. Wavefella RHEO Race (12 ft) is designed specifically for touring with a displacement-style nose for cutting through chop.
Width (30-32 in)
Narrower than all-around boards for reduced drag. 30-32 inches offers the best balance of stability and speed for experienced paddlers. Beginners should opt for 32-33 inches. The narrower profile requires better balance but rewards with 15-25% faster mile splits.
Volume (280-350 L)
Higher volume supports rider weight plus gear. Touring boards typically have 6-inch thickness for maximum volume. A 300+ liter board can support a 200 lb paddler with 30 lbs of gear. More volume also provides secondary stability when carrying loaded dry bags.
Attachment Points
Deck rigging, bungee cords, and D-rings for securing dry bags. Multiple attachment points allow balanced weight distribution. A bow line attachment for towing or securing the board at camp. Look for stainless steel or marine-grade plastic hardware that won't corrode.
Touring Gear Checklist
Essential Gear
- Touring board with deck rigging
- Carbon or fiberglass paddle
- Type III PFD or inflatable belt pack
- Coiled leash (calf or ankle)
- Dry bags (20-30 L for gear)
- Water (2-3 L per person per day)
Navigation & Safety
- Waterproof chart or GPS device
- VHF radio or satellite messenger
- Signal mirror and whistle
- Headlamp with spare batteries
- First aid kit
- Tow tether for group paddling
Touring Technique Tips
Efficient Paddling
- Engage your core — paddling power comes from torso rotation, not arms
- Use a longer paddle (height + 10-12 in) for touring reach
- Maintain a steady cadence of 50-60 strokes per minute
- Switch sides every 5-10 strokes to maintain course
- Practice the sweep stroke for efficient turning
Common Touring Mistakes
- Taking an all-around board on multi-day trips — poor glide efficiency
- Overloading the board — keep gear weight under 30 lbs
- Not checking wind forecasts — headwinds can make progress impossible
- Paddling too hard early — pace yourself for the full distance
Wavefella Touring Recommendations
The Wavefella RHEO Race (14' x 26" x 6") is purpose-built for touring with a wave-piercing displacement nose and 18 PSI rated carbon hybrid construction for maximum rigidity. Pair it with the Wavefella Carbon Paddle (18 oz, scoop blade) for the most efficient touring setup. The Horizon Lines (11' x 32") is an excellent shorter-distance touring option for intermediate paddlers who want a more stable platform.
