An inflatable stand-up paddle board (iSUP) is a paddle board constructed from drop-stitch PVC fabric that becomes rigid when inflated to high pressure. Thousands of polyester threads connect the top and bottom fabric layers; when inflated, these threads hold the two surfaces at a fixed distance, creating a rigid, stable structure that behaves like a hard epoxy or fiberglass board while remaining deflatable and packable.
Unlike traditional hard boards, iSUPs can be deflated, rolled, and stored in a backpack-sized carrying case — the core reason they dominate rental fleets, resort programs, and guided tours.
How Inflatable SUPs Are Constructed
Outer PVC Shell
Marine-grade, UV-stabilized, abrasion-resistant PVC. Commercial-grade boards use 1000 denier or higher, double-layer construction for puncture resistance.
Drop-Stitch Core
Thousands of polyester threads create the rigid internal structure. Higher thread density equals greater stiffness and higher pressure tolerance.
Rail Reinforcement
