Equipment by Environment
Sheltered Waters (Lakes, Slow Rivers)
- PFD Type 50N+: EN 393/ISO 12402-5
- Whistle: Audible at 1 km
- Throw line: 15 m minimum
- First aid kit: Waterproof container
Coastal Waters
- PFD Type 100N+: EN 12402-4/ISO 12402-4
- Communication: Waterproof VHF radio or mobile phone in waterproof case
- Navigation: Compass or GPS
- Light source: Waterproof flashlight or strobe
- Signaling: Whistle + mirror or flare
Offshore/Open Water
- PFD Type 150N+: EN 12402-3/ISO 12402-3 or SOLAS
- Communication: VHF radio (DSC capable)
- EPIRB or PLB: 406 MHz with GPS
- Flares: SOLAS-grade hand flares + parachute flares
- Thermal protection: Exposure suit or dry suit
