Inflatable SUP Stability Research — How Width, Length, and Volume Affect Balance
A quantitative analysis of how SUP board dimensions affect primary and secondary stability, with recommendations for beginner, intermediate, and advanced paddlers.
Abstract
This research examines the relationship between inflatable SUP board geometry and stability performance. Primary stability (initial resistance to tipping) and secondary stability (reserve stability at the edge of the balance envelope) were measured across 12 board configurations.

Board width is the dominant factor in primary stability: each additional inch of width at 32” baseline reduces lateral tilt by approximately 2.3° under identical load conditions.

Methodology
Testing was conducted at the Wavefella Engineering Lab using a computer-controlled balance platform with a 75 kg anthropomorphic load. Each board was tested at 12 PSI and 15 PSI to measure the effect of inflation pressure on stability.

Conclusions
For beginner paddlers, a minimum 32” width with a length of 10’6” to 11’0” provides optimal primary stability. Intermediate paddlers benefit from 32” boards with longer hulls (11’0” to 12’0”) for improved tracking without significant stability loss. Advanced paddlers can use 30” boards where secondary stability becomes more important than primary stability.
