A factory audit is a systematic evaluation of a manufacturing facility's capabilities, quality management systems, and production processes. For inflatable watercraft — where product failure can have safety implications — factory audits are essential for verifying that a supplier can consistently produce boards, kayaks, and boats that meet specifications. A thorough audit covers raw material sourcing, production equipment, quality control processes, worker safety, and environmental compliance. Regular audits reduce supply chain risk and ensure product consistency across production runs.

Quality Management System

Material Sourcing & Storage

Verification of PVC fabric specifications from suppliers. Material test certificates (tensile strength, tear resistance, UV stability). Storage conditions for PVC rolls, drop-stitch fabric, adhesive, and components. FIFO inventory management to prevent material aging.

Production Equipment

RF welding machine calibration and maintenance records. Hot air welder temperature verification (±5°C accuracy). Drop-stitch loom threading consistency. Pressure testing equipment calibration. All equipment must have documented maintenance schedules and calibration certificates.

Process Audit

Production Process Verification

Fabric Cutting: Verify laser or die-cut accuracy within ±1 mm. Check that fabric grain direction matches specifications. Inspect edge quality — frayed edges indicate dull cutting tools.
Seam Welding: Monitor RF welding parameters (power, time, pressure) are within specification for each product. Conduct peel tests on sample welds every hour — minimum 85 N/5cm for premium PVC. Hot air weld temperature should be verified with contact thermometers.
Assembly: Verify valve installation torque and sealant application. Check D-ring and handle attachment reinforcement. Inspect bungee cord routing and tension. All attachment points should be tested to 2x their rated load.
Pressure Testing: Each inflatable must pass a 24-hour pressure hold test at rated PSI with less than 2% pressure loss. Inflate to 1.5x rated PSI for burst testing on sample products. Record all test results with product serial numbers.
Final Inspection: Visual inspection of all seams, valves, and attachments. Dimensional verification against spec sheet. Inflate to rated PSI and check for symmetrical shape. Accessory kit completeness check. Pack quality and label accuracy verification.
