Before You Go

Check weather & water conditions

Wind above 15 mph, thunderstorms, or cold water temps require extra caution or postponement.

File a float plan

Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return. Include launch site, route, and vehicle information.

Inspect your equipment

Check for leaks, secure fin boxes, confirm inflation pressure (12–15 PSI for SUPs), and test valves.

Know your limits

Choose waters matching your skill level. Beginners should start on calm, protected flatwater.

Essential Gear

US Coast Guard-approved life jacket (PFD)

Required by law on vessels. Wearable, not just onboard. Type III is recommended for SUP and kayak.

Leash (SUP)

A coiled leash keeps you connected to your board. Use a quick-release belt leash in moving water.

Whistle or sound device

Required on vessels over 16 ft. Even on SUPs, a whistle attached to your PFD is a simple lifesaver.

Phone in waterproof case

For emergencies. Keep it in a dry bag or waterproof phone pouch attached to your person or board.

On the Water

Stay visible

Bright clothing and a flag or light increase visibility. Kayaks and paddle boards sit low — other boaters may not see you.

Maintain safe distance

Give motorized vessels wide berth. Cross channels quickly and at a right angle. Yield to sailboats and larger craft.

Hydrate & sun protect

Water reflects UV rays. Sunburn and dehydration happen fast on the water. Wear SPF 50+ and bring fresh water.

Know self-rescue techniques

Practice remounting your SUP or kayak in calm water before needing it. Learn the basic re-entry technique.
